Is additional sealing material required to connect SAE flange hose fittings?

Date:2023-10-01
Connecting SAE flange hose fittings usually does not require additional sealing materials because the SAE flange itself is already designed to have good sealing performance.

1. Flange design:
SAE flanges usually use O-ring seals or flat sealing surfaces to ensure sealing. These sealing elements are located on the contact surface of the flange and their main purpose is to create a reliable seal when connecting, preventing leakage of liquid or gas. This design effectively provides sealing performance without the need for additional sealing materials.
2. Sufficient preload:
To ensure the effectiveness of the flange seal, sufficient pre-tightening force needs to be applied when connecting SAE flange hose fittings. Typically this is accomplished by tightening bolts or screws on the flange. Appropriate preload force compresses the sealing element to ensure sealing performance. If the preload force is insufficient, leakage may occur.
3. Flange surface preparation:
Before connecting, be sure that the contact surface of the SAE flange is clean, smooth and free of scratches or damage. Poor surface condition can cause seal failure. It is important to clean and inspect the flange surface to ensure it is smooth and flat. If there is dirt, oxidation, or damage to the flange surface, they may affect sealing performance.
4. It is not recommended to add additional sealing materials:
In general, it is not recommended to add additional sealing materials such as lubricants, sealants or insulating glue when connecting SAE flange hose fittings. SAE flanges already include sealing elements, and additional materials may interfere with the sealing performance and even lead to unstable flange connections or damage to the sealing elements. Therefore, no additional sealing material is usually required when connecting SAE flanges.
5. Regular inspection and maintenance:
Although the SAE flange itself provides reliable sealing performance, it is critical to regularly inspect the connection to ensure the seal is still effective. Over time, sealing elements may wear out or be affected by environmental factors. If signs of leakage or seal failure are found, timely measures should be taken to repair or replace sealing components to maintain the normal operation and safety of the system.

SAE Flange 87311 Hydraulic Hose Coupling Flange Fittings
SAE Flange 87311 Hydraulic Hose Coupling Flange Fittings are flange fittings for hydraulic hose connections. It is designed with SAE (American Society of Engineers) standards to provide a reliable hydraulic hose connection and sealing solution.
SAE Flange 87311 fittings have a flanged connection design for hose connections in hydraulic systems. It consists of two flange halves, each with a set of tapped and bolt holes. This design allows the hydraulic hose to be tightly connected to the fittings and secured by bolts and nuts, providing a reliable connection and seal.
